✍️ Hit a ceiling with the amount of money you can make? Do this.

Designers often find it difficult to make enough money.
The reasons for this can vary, but usually come down to one of three things:

  1. Not being able to raise rates with current clients.
  2. Getting work only through referrals without any control over where the work is coming from.
  3. Hitting a ceiling with the amount of money you can make.

However, there are three things that can help you make more money:

  1. Give yourself more time.
  2. Find higher-paying clients.
  3. Build systems to make your business more sustainable.

Giving Yourself More Time

The first thing you can do to make more money as a designer is giving yourself more time. As a service-based business, you are exchanging your time for money.

At some point, you are going to hit a ceiling with the amount of clients that you can take on because you only have so much time.

The two things you can do to solve this problem are:

  • Charge more for your work and take on fewer clients
  • Hire people to help you with the workload

If you choose to charge more for your work, you should also be more selective about which clients you take on. By being more selective, you’ll be able to take on higher-paying clients and avoid those who don’t value your work.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to hire people to help you out, you should consider the cost of hiring someone versus the cost of your time. If you’re able to hire someone for a lower cost than what you charge your clients, then it makes sense to take on more work and hire someone to help you out.

Finding Higher-Paying Clients

The second thing you can do to make more money as a designer is finding higher-paying clients.

This requires experimenting with different methods beyond just relying on referrals.

Referrals are great because they help build trust quickly with clients, but you have no control over where they come from. To find higher-paying clients, you need to be more proactive in seeking them out.

An easy way to do this is to take a look at where your clients are coming from that isn’t in the referral category.

If you find a pattern of where your clients are coming from, you can double down on those activities to help you generate more potential clients.

Being consistent and managing your efforts when it comes to clients will bring you more client leads and help you to make more money. When you have more options, it means you can charge more because you can be a little bit more picky about your clients.

Sometimes it's hard to find time to look for new higher paying clients, which is where building systems comes in.

Building a Sustainable Business

The third thing you can do to make more money as a designer is build a sustainable business.

This involves spending any free time on building systems and processes to make your business more efficient and sustainable and most importantly less stressful.

Building systems and processes helps you to keep up with your marketing and outreach efforts.

When you do this, you can free up even more time to help you focus on things that will help you make more money like reaching out to bigger and higher paying clients or selling online products or productised services rather than services that require your time.

This is what a sustainable cycle of work looks like. You take on client jobs, but then you have time in between to build better systems so you can continue to reach bigger and better clients and spend more time working on your business rather than just in your business.

In my course Balanced Business Bootcamp I help you to build a sustainable business that works for you so you can make more money but also have the freedom to do what you love.
