Today's dilemma: Past Client NDA's

Q. I’ve worked for 12 years as a freelancer, (predominantly) creating animations used in e-learning content / internal training.

I’ve been lucky enough to create content for a host of global brands and leading UK businesses across a wide range of sectors.

BUT… it has always been through e-learning providers or agencies, never direct.

So, I’m not allowed to publicly associate myself with the brands in any format, even my website, and because of the content being internal and NDA, I can’t use it in my reels.

I’ve a huge library of great work and experience, but how do I get potential new clients to even contact me or trust my abilities when I can’t promote myself?

A. Dear motion designer,

Many designers find this tough, so thanks for reaching out to Designer Dilemmas.

First, I’d suggest including a clause in your contract. This clause should allow you to share the work for promotional purposes. While it may not always be possible, it’s worth trying with each new client.

Here are some other options you might consider:

  1. Create personal projects based on what you learnt during your client projects. You don’t have to have client work on your site. As long as your work is good. Why not try mini 5-second projects? They can be part of a series, which is easier than making a 3-minute animated film.
  2. Gather testimonials from your clients. When you don’t have project proof, these can help to build trust with future clients.
  3. You could also seek direct clients. Before the project starts, ask if you can showcase the work. It’s even better if you can create a case study based on their project. With direct clients, having a niche is powerful because you can also use copywriting to show that you understand your specific client's problems.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful.

How’s the first half of 2025 been for you?

Maybe it’s been fab and you’ve smashed all your goals.

Or maybe you started strong in Jan with lots of ambitions but some of them have fallen by the wayside (don't worry, it happens).

This is why every year in June, I do a 'Reclaim Your Year Workshop.'

You’ve got 6 whole months left of 2025, so let’s make them matter.

Maybe you’ve got a financial goal that’s gone off track, how can you break that up for the next 6-12 months to make it happen?

It’s about regular review, adjustment, and taking small, actionable steps to reach your targets.

I'm running this workshop in my group coaching program, Balanced Business Bootcamp next week.

I guide you through my template, going through:

  • Reflecting on the goals you made at the start of the year.
  • Figuring out what adjustments need to be made to achieve these goals by December.
  • Making a new set of goals and small actionable steps for Q3 and Q4.

Hey Reader, Two weeks ago, a post from Jakub, a Balanced Business Bootcamp member, appeared in my feed. He told everyone not to hire him for work. This piqued my interest. What was he up to? And why was he telling clients NOT TO BOOK HIM?!? He was setting out on a challenge. To build his new website in one week! I dunno about you, but that sounds hard!!!! In BBB, we set actionable goals, so I was immediately excited about his experiment in public. From then on, Jakub posted his website's...

Why it's hard to get clients right now I've been speaking with lots of motion designers recently, One thing is clear: it's tough to get clients right now. Whether it's due to the economy or increased competition. The reason doesn't matter. What matters is what you do about it Reader I've been helping motion designers get clients since 2017. What's changed in that time? Well, a LOT! What has stayed the same is that businesses thrive or fail based on the relationships they've built. Perhaps you...
