I got a letter from HMRC…

Hey Reader,

Back in 2024, I got a letter through the post saying I owed money to HMRC and it was overdue!

I’ve always paid my tax on time, so this was a big shock.

It was around £400, so not a lot.

I emailed my accountant and paid the due balance on that same day.

Turns out my business address hadn’t been updated and I didn’t realise.

It was a small mistake, but it showed me I didn’t fully understand my numbers or exactly what I was supposed to be paying and when.

I did have a cash flow spreadsheet, but it was old and out of date.

Even though I had paid for Xero for years, I never logged in; my accountant used it, but nothing added up inside, and it didn’t make any sense to me.

I wanted to get this sorted and get a clear picture of my numbers asap.

I remember seeing this guy on LinkedIn with a sombrero hat claiming he was the accountant for creatives.

So I added him to my list of accountants to speak to.

I met Tom from The 3Key. He explained his company’s approach to tax and how he would help.

What really stuck out to me was his proactive approach.

He sends me quarterly reports via video, where he walks through Xero sharing:

  • How much money I’ve made.
  • How much profit I have.
  • How much tax I should have set aside.
  • Making sure everything is correct so that HMRC won’t be on my case.

It’s actually something I’m excited to watch each quarter because it gives me massive clarity on my business, simplifies paying taxes and reduces the time I spend on it.

With Tom and The 3Key team’s help, you’ll pay yourself in the most tax-efficient way and claim expenses your business is entitled to.

That means more money in your pocket.

If you want to make paying your tax easier and stress-free, I highly recommend The 3Key.

This issue is sponsored by Pitch Hi Reader, When I started pitching clients, I’d get a brief and make it all about the creative, and I wouldn’t win the project. Many times working at Google, I pitched animations and focused only on style, colours, texture, and story. My pitches were missing one vital piece: the client’s goals. Once I started listening to their problems and sharing their goals back to them. I started to win more pitches. And now, with Pitch’s MCP, it’s even easier, because you...

This issue is sponsored by Pitch Hi Reader, Last year, I cold-emailed a brand I’d wanted to work with for ages! They actually replied, I couldn’t believe it. Unfortunately, they didn’t want to jump on a call with me. (no time) But they DID want to see what I could do for them. Errrr….What do I send them? How do I get them to say yes? What I could have done was send them one project idea and a flat fee and hoped for the best! But I had no idea what their budget was. Instead, I created a...

Your deck’s open, your laptop’s covered in tabs, and you start thinking you need to include everything to win the project. I’ve been there – but this simple pitch deck structure has helped me win 2 big client projects last year, and it’s helped other motion designers too. Here’s what I include in my pitch decks: I focus on the client, not me or my...
